What to do post-holiday

After we have all had a chance to catch our breath from the busy and very decorated holidays, sometimes we are left looking around our homes that now seem bare and in need of refreshing. We wonder, "what next?". For many it is still very cold out and looking towards spring seems premature.
It may also feel nice to have your house back to normal, vowing to never use glitter wrapping paper ever again. Once the guests have left, the decorations come down, some of us are still looking ahead to a couple more months of cold weather. In these months before spring, I think it is a good idea to get a jump on spring cleaning. I've often wondered what I was thinking, saving one of springs gorgeous sunny days to clean out a closet. Its hard to stay focused, when the sun is shining and every part of you wants to run outside! It doesnt have to be a drag, turn up your music and set up a system for yourself to help you breeze through it.
Now is a good time to get reorganized.
Start with the closets and cabinets. If you have not worn a clothing item in a year, and cannot say with certainty that you will wear it this season, I urge you to donate it. There are also consignment stores that may take your as they say "gently used" items and give you a small amount of money for them. Do this with shoes and socks, the whole of your wardrobe. Be a tough editor, too. Often we say "you never know when I might need this" but look at it carefully-have you needed it lately?
Move on to your cabinets, and recycle and throw away products that are past their prime-old cosmetics, old prescriptions, or toiletries.
Once the closets and cabinets have been "edited", clean them too. Vaccuum out the drawers and wipe down the interior of the drawer and cabinet as well as the item you are putting back into the cabinet, with your favorite cleaner. Vaccuum closets too, and try arranging items in a way that you use them, or can see them better. For instance, I like to put similar clothing together. Sleeveless tops, dressy tops, short skirts, long skirts. I even color code darks through lights-but that's what works for me.
This can refresh your home, and motivate you through the post-holiday hangover feeling.
Then, when spring arrives you can spend more time making your home feel light and airy. You can have fun transforming the once darker, cozier, spice scented and warm fabrics into a bright, sunny, crisp space.
